Teaching

Teaching machine quilting is one of my passions.  Quilting is my passion and that I get to teach it is such a huge bonus.  There is a joy watching someone just get the process.  After a series of email conversations I’ve started working with another quilter through the process of how  I work as a quilter.

When “Twilight in the Bronx” was created the design process happened pretty much over time in my head and when I started designing the star on the fabric it just went from there.  I had no plan for the quilting, in fact at one point I ripped most of it out and started over!  I’ve followed the same process with “Moon Over Manhattan”.  I do practice quilting – usually with either paper & pen or fat quarters, batting and the good thread.  When I see a motif I like, the paper & pens come out and I play until I’m satisfied with what it looks like.

At some point I’d like to be able to teach online and have started working with the quilter mentioned above to get a feel for how the process works.  This quilter is soooooo patient, I’m a bit slow responding.  The gift in this though is that as we’ve corresponded over the last couple of days the quilter shared that their best friend has asked what’s happened in the last few weeks it’s like a switch has been flipped, that the quilting has gone from good and competent to the creativity level heading off the charts and the quilting much more interesting and beautiful.

This is a gift, a gift as a teacher and a gift for this quilter who is progressing amazingly.  I’m truly honored to be a part of that process!

A Quilt Shop in Brooklyn

My sweetie & I went to Brooklyn today to see a show a friend of ours is participating in.  As we walked around the neighborhood looking for a little bite to eat I looked across the street and there it was a little quilt shop called Fiber Notion.  Kat didn’t open until 11:00 so we went back after breakfast.  This is a delightful shop with some unique fabric and embellishments for quilters.  I picked up some fabric I’d wanted for years, Alexander Henry “Our Lady of Guadalupe” and “Saints”.  Then a yard of Echino Cocoa brown fabric, it’s yummy!

I have several pieces of this in other colors and can hardly wait to quilt this.  Like a lot of other solid/mottled fabric in my collection I think I’ll be playing with thread with this.  Or as I’m sitting here typing, it could easily become the back to the next quilt – the one I hope to get into Houston – that the idea is still in my brain trying to come out.
