Word

I’ve long since given up making new years resolutions though the time of year brings the opportunity for reflection.  One word I’ve tried hard to embrace over the years is a sense of gratitude.  It’s not always easy because when the challenges come along and I can not see the immediate benefit I can certainly delve into a negative place.

At this moment what seems like a very light schedule:

New England Quilt Festival April 10 – 13

Canton Village Quilt Studio in June

AQS – Des Moines and probably Pacific Northwest Quilt Show.

It feels like there’s a lot of time here however I’m hard at work on one quilt due in about 9 days.  Another due in mid February and then both Keith Dommer and Jeanie Sumrall-Ajero are sending competition quilts and I have the architectural challenge.   That’s a lot of quilting time.  I’m also making a personal commitment to another project that I should have submitted a year ago.  Oh yeah and then there’s working and teaching at the quilt shop where I work.

So while it felt like I didn’t have a lot to do this year there’s more there than I first realized.

This time of reflection, particularly on the quilt that I’m working on right now and seeing how other quilters/artists/fiber artist embrace this time of year has led to choosing a word for the year to focus on.  And I came to this in kind of a strange way.  Several times over the last month or so I’ve heard the Dr. Who promo where Dr. Who says, “it’s going to be EPIC” and for some reason last night I posted this on fb.  And quilter Lisa Sipes responded Dr. Who eh?  She’s been talking EPIC for as long as I’ve known her on fb.  The girl can quilt I mean seriously quilt.  She rocks the quilting world with posts like this.  I double dog dare you not to cry when you read that post.

So last night the unruly quilt and I finally came to an agreement where I’m in love with the quilt again.  I can tell you this has been a very very hard slog one that I thankfully have not abandoned.  There is gratitude and I’m looking forward to doing all the rest of the time that I’ll spend on this quilt.  In thinking about this quilt, about the Dr. Who promo and oh just quilting in general the word on my foggy morning brain

EPIC

EPIC – extending beyond the usual or ordinary in size or scope; heroic, majestic, impressively great.

Epic is my word of the year.

I’m looking forward to seeing how embracing a word helps shape and guide the year.  What will your word of the year be?

  1. Hmmm, that’s a really good question…I think my word is actually a phrase..”I think I can, I think I can, I think I can…” like the Little Engine that Could. 😀 Like “EPIC” though. I’ll be fascinated to see what results from your epic needle.
