If memory serves I met Erin on a shuttle from Pittsburgh Quilt Market to the airport on my way home. She’d just published her first book and talked excitedly for the trip, which made the time pass way too quickly. Within a Market or two she’d fully developed a course for teaching kids sewing. Tracy Mooney (see her blog post next week) were impressed with Erin’s work.
For me as a quilter it is fascinating to see what I consider two worlds, garments and quilt making, collide in a really neat way, in a wide range of scale, and function. I mean just check out this suitcase for both the girl and the doll. I want that suitcase to travel with me on the road, the doll suitcase would be great as a sewing kit, or to give a gift.
While the focus of the book is for kids, and their 18” dolls, there are techniques for garment sewing that are explained in a clear, and direct way, like using a seam gauge to extend the length of a paper pattern before you cut. I’ve only used it in the other direction, to hem skirts, & dresses. Hello sewing room multi-tasker. woot!
Now, if you’ve read any book review I’ve ever written one of the things I look for is the dedication. Erin dedicates the book to Mayme, her grandmother who patiently taught her to sew socks for her dolls. How sweet is this?! From what I can see in all of Erin’s books and classes Mayme taught her something else, how to teach. Learning and honing the sewing skills are one thing; being able to teach is another. Erin’s got that down. The presentation in the book is clear enough that this non-garment sewist could take on a few of the easier project. Oh! and she’s got that for ya too, each pattern has one, two, or three stars indicating Beginner, Advanced Beginner, and Intermediate level and remember that one thing leads to another. The skills from the beginner work will lead to the Advanced Beginner and Intermediate patterns.
