Love Your Creative Space Blog Tour

gratuitous quilting photo

I first wrote about Lilo’s book here. Because of something else we ended up talking on the phone for about an hour while I was in a furniture store pondering sofa’s, recliners, side tables, and color. Lilo reminded me that this area has lots of shops with secondhand furniture that might be redone or repurposed. That comment did get me thinking about how to go about getting the things I need and want for the new sewing space, although at the moment being patient and waiting until such a time where I have a place to put furniture is key to this whole thing.

Lilo speaks of the “Circle of Reach” where you are the center, then taking time to consider what is most frequently used, and what is least used. Keep the items most frequently used nearest you, and less frequently used items further outside out from you in that circle. For me this will include keeping my thread, needles, snips and Batt Scooters close. Batting in packages, paperwork, and a few other things will live in my office.

One of the things I noticed in all of the images in Love Your Creative Space is moments of beauty within the practicality. Our creative space can, and should, inspire us in the way that is unique to us. If we prefer clean lines and not much hanging around, giving a sense of calm and order that sparks ideas and allows us to function, then work towards creating that space. I realized something in the move, I like to see my fabric, notions, books, all of it so I’ll be keeping this in mind. I also like color, a lot so one wall will be painted orange, and I’m thinkin’ chalk paint. There is an image from Nancy Arsenault’s studio of her pressing station which is several drawer units with a cut to size pressing board on the top. There is one more drawer unit to the right that holds her iron/steamer. This kind of multi-function setup has the potential for fitting any space. If you’re using the dining room to sew & quilt, throw a table cloth over it and it becomes a functional side board to serve guests.

Functional and Inspirational.

  1. We love our pizza! Has to be all homemade from the dough to the sauce. Favourite topping would be sliced dill pickles … just try it before you judge it.

  2. I think in addition to the things you mentioned, besides the circle of reach and creative style is knowing what your storage aesthetic is. Like you I need to see… not everything all the time, but an opaque closed box… is not for me. I also use the “like and kind” method for storage. Such as in the SHARPS box, all the sharp objects that are not kept in the ‘circle of reach’ are in this box, (extra scissors, rotary blades, xacto knives, etc). The same for NEEDLES (hand -not the machine), PINS, ADHESIVES (tapes & glues), etc. I try to choose a box that will allow some growth to the collection… and LABELS on the boxes, on both ends so I never have to worry about which end goes in first.

  3. Hi Terri. My space is too small for my collections of 50 years. I have a hard time letting anything go, so this would e an awesome addition to my ever burgeoning library. It would definitely help me start rethinking what I have and what I need and want.. Thanks

  4. I’d love to win the book – it’s desperately needed as things here have gotten completely out of hand, with any semblance of order gone! As to pizza toppings, my favourite combination is chicken, red onion, bell peppers and jalapeno. Yum.

  5. I have a new space and am moving into it a little at a time. I’m looking for ideas and am gathering thoughts as I read each blog post. Thank you for the ideas you are spinning for me!

  6. I love the pizza with Canadian bacon and pineapple. as for Creating a sewing space, I need help, lots of help. I have a very small area with a Big stash. I even have a rented storage space.

  7. All veggie is my fav pizza. Especially like mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and spinach. Sometimes artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes.

  8. Pizza toppings, the more the merrier. Pepperoni, sausage, onion, green pepper, fresh mushrooms, black olives. Then there are the specialty pizzas, margarita, and ones with goat cheese….there is no end. LOL

  9. Artichoke hearts and ricotta cheese are my favorite toppings. I always find ideas I love but I can’t seem to picture how they will work in my space(s). So it always seems to be a work in process.

  10. Would love to win a copy of Lilo’s book! Cause I definitely need help. I’m losing my sewing mojo due to all the stuff crammed into a small room. Definitely need reorganization and ideas on storage!

  11. Pepperoni & mushroom!!! I need this book. I need help for my tiny space with overwhelming amounts of fabrics, threads, batting, patterns….I don’t think I need to say more other than my husband uses the desktop in the same space. Thank you

  12. Pizza is once a week at our house. Costco’s Molinari crusts, my own no_sugar marinara, plus sausage or pepperoni, onions, mushrooms and Mozzarella. Yum!

  13. Favorite? Pepperoni! Beyond that, anything you can imagine! Even saw a recipe the other day (in Southern Living) for a pizza with fresh cut corn on it! Have to try!

  14. Oh…where to start? I have 2 sewing spaces…but both are cluttered beyond belief. I constantly shuffle things from one pile to another, from one space to another before I can sew and worse….from one room to another. Sigh!

  15. My favorite pizza toppings are sausage, kalamata olives, roasted garlic, red onion, mushrooms, and artichoke hearts on pesto–tomato sauce doesn’t get it for me!

  16. My favourite pizza topping is pineapple, ham and black olives. The black olives make the pizza.

  17. springleafstudios – Colorado – Independent quilt pattern designer exploring the wonderful world of modern and contemporary quilting. I blog at www.springleafstudios.com Come on over and visit. I'd love to meet you.
    springleafstudios says:

    Pepperoni, bacon and green onion.

  18. terryknott – I enjoy the process of making a quilt from start to finish. It is fun to use a variety of fabric types from batik to Civil War reproductions--although not in the same project! I ALWAYS have more projects started than I finish these days and I'm trying to turn those works in progress into finished quilts.
    terryknott says:

Anchovies, sausage, pepperoni, olives and onions. . .of course, honestly, any pizza topping is the best when it comes to eating!!!

  19. Pizza crust needs to be cracker thin and crisp and the it should have lots and of cheeses on it….who needs meat or veggies when you can have cheese!

  20. I love all pizza toppings, the more the better–I am eating cold pizza for lunch right this minute as I read through your blog, lol!! Thanks for the opportunity to win!!

  21. I find for me organizing is an ongoing process. Organizing is my place of peace it helps keep my mind calm. I make my own pizza with onions, black olives, green peppers, pepperoni, hamburger and lots of cheese mozzarella and cheddar. Good thing I just finished lunch or I would be in the kitchen.

  22. I’m a purist… a really good cheese pizza is my hands down favorite; although I do like to occasionally get a little crazy and add fresh tomatoes and basil. If I’m REALLY crazy, I’ll opt for pastrami with dill pickles and mustard.

  23. Favorite pizza toppings? I love it ALL: hamburger, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black olives, green olives, pineapple. Probably EVERYTHING but anchovies.
And, I want to get myself back to being ORGANIZED in my space. I have WAY too much “stuff,” and need to start purging things. It WAS a pretty organized space when I first moved to that space over 15 years ago. But, I have acquired a lot more “stuff” since then. It doesn’t FIT any longer!!! YIKES. I need help

  24. A place near me makes pierogie pizza which I love, so I guess I like cheese, mashed potatoes and onions on my pizza. I also crave their taco pizza, so guess what is on that one…🌮.

  25. Ohhhh, you opened a can of “let’s say olives”…. bit more tasteful considering what we are talking about lol…. depending on the day and how I feel… one of my favorites is a Hawaiian pizza ham and pineapple, but then again… I do love a veggie pizza too… so you can taste the flavors and let them shine. Thanks so much for letting me enter. My sewing room is pretty good… just it happens to be the place where most everything gets tossed. Seems I always have to tidy before I can get to do any sewing/quilting etc…

  26. My favorite pizza is tomato sauce with Italian spices and garlic, chicken, black olives, diced tomatoes, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese and a light sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. Oh, I am ready for one!!

  27. Pizza toppings: mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomatoes, sausage or pepperoni, and of course, lots of cheese. Recently had dill pickle pizza at my son’s house–not bad, reminded me of a cheese sandwich.

  28. 🙂 That’s an interesting question on a quilting blog!

If I had my druthers, I’d take one of those fancy, artisanal pizzas with the artichoke hearts and other veggies. 🙂

If I’m eating with the family, a taco pizza usually makes everyone happy, even the daughter who doesn’t like pizza!

  29. Besides being helpful in the sewing space, this book would be a help in every room where organization and seeing things with a fresh eye is needed. Ham and pineapple is my favorite, but the meatier toppings are alWays the faves of the men in the family.

  30. My favorite pizza toppings are red tomato sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, red bell peppers, spinach, basil, minced garlic, purple onions, pineapple, pesto (afterbake).

I not only need to reorganize my sewing stuff , but also all the stuff that I store here for my quilt group.

  31. I love Margarette Pizza’s so my favorite toppings are fresh basil leaves, with a touch of olive oil, sauce, and cheese.

  32. White pizza with all the veggies!
I’ve moved twice in a year, going from large to small space. From all accounts, the book addresses these issues! Thanks for your preview and thoughts.

  33. I love lots of pepperoni, green peppers, red or white onions mushrooms and lots of cheese with red pepper flakes or a taco pizza with refried beans, chicken, lettuce, onions, cheese and salsa! Yummy! Its a toss up between the two.

  34. Love a good cheese pizza. And organizational ideas. I’m always on the look out for ways to do things better. So I would love this book.

  35. Absolute favourite pizza topping has to be “yiros” meat (you might call it a kebab but its what we call in oz) with mushroom, capsicum(you call them peppers i think) and lots of mozarella cheese

  36. I love papa murphy garlic chicken so i guess my favorite topping would be chicken & a white garlic sauce. Love the creative touch idea to the creative spaces – need to see with new eyes! Thanks

  37. Mushroom, onion, capsicum ( red pepper), fresh tomato, basil and loads of cheese. And I always have to clear the sewing stuff off the table to enjoy it.

  38. Pizza toppings – hard to narrow it down! Can I say anything but anchovies? But if I have to say just a few – pineapple, ham, mushrooms and CHEESE, lots of cheese!

  39. I would love to win a copy of this book. My small space is overflowing and unorganized – could use some ideas for creative ways to incorporate all the things.
My favorite pizza toppings are Canadian bacon and mushrooms.
    Enjoyed your blog. Thanks

  40. Polly Lushbottom – I live at Raumati Beach with my lovely partner Vanessa and stepson, Callum. My oldest stepson, Liam is away studying in Christchurch. I really miss him. I am a dedicated craft dilettante and will give most things a go. I love quilting, scrapbooking, art journaling, crochet, beading, free motion embroidery, embroidery, dying wool, polymer clay and so on.
    Polly Lushbottom says:

    Cranberry, chicken, brie

  41. My new house studio is great… but I still don’t have enough room for everything. LOL Guess I have to go and buy a new house again! LOL My Fav. pizza toppings…. meatball and mushrooms.

  42. After years of sewing in the dining room, I’ll soon be moving into my son’s old bedroom. I could use some organizing ideas. Taco pizza from our local pizza place is my favorite

  43. acityquilter – Christian, mom and mom-in-law, daughter/sister/aunt/cousin, English major, former medical secretary, sea lover, quilter and seamstress, reader, new england native
    acityquilter says:

well before heart surgery it was definitely pepperoni but now strictly veg….mushrooms, roasted peppers red or green and caramlized ionions…

  44. I’m a plain old peperoni kind of girl but put any kind of pizza in front of me and I’ll devour it like its my last meal. I love pizza! I also am going to love this book. It looks like just what I need to get my sewing space in order.

  45. Since part of my new normal has been eating more plant based, my pizza toppings of choice these days are a sauteed mix of spinach, mushrooms, sweet peppers, red onions and garlic. Add some fresh herbs like thyme and oregano and done! Seeing the previews of this book has me also thinking about updating my space going forward as well.

  46. My space is a display of projects – past and present! It’s so encouraging to see what I can and have accomplished. I also love beef and onion thin crust pizza.

  47. A local pizza shop now gone used to make a perogi pizza, potato onion bacon and Cheese with a side of sour cream. I have nee been able to duplicate it, Helen

  48. I am pretty much a “plain jane” when it come to pizza (and most food). My most favorite is cheese. Margarite comes in second, following by Hawaiian (ham and pineapple — yes, I know some people are repulsed by this.)

  49. Repurpose is my middle name. When a jeans store went out of business I bought some of their display wall and use it in my sewing space to store fabric. Then when a library stopped using their card catalog I bought it and it does a great job of storing notions.

  50. Teri I have a large space packed to the gills. Have received lots of patterns, quilt mags, and fabric from friends downsizing. I make things and give them away. Very little stays with me. It would really help to have such a wonderful book to help figure out how to have it organized so that I could just go to my quilt room and sew. This book looks like it could be the answer to a lot of my concerns.
My favorite pizza is Wombo Combo by Round Table: all the meats, pineapple, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, olives and fresh tomatoes on top of it all. Didn’t know about artichoke hearts until had on this pizza.
Thanks for the op to win this book. QuiltedDrummer from Bandon by the Sea Oregon

  51. Pizza is the meal of the day when too busy sewing! We like pepperoni, green peppers, mushrooms- yummy!! I’m looking forward to Lilo’s book to find ideas on organizing my sewing/fabric mess!

  52. LOL… I had to re-read your blog post to understand where all of the pizza references were coming from. Sheesh–obvious to me now that I skimmed it the first go-round! Pizza for me would have to include pepperoni, bacon, onion, sweet peppers, fresh jalapenos, & lots of mozzarella as well as the obligatory medium-thick crust and pizza sauce.

  53. I believe my room is too small for that “circle approach” but I’d love to see what is recommended. I’m tempted to hire a contractor to make a pocket cabinet in an interior wall for my thread s with matching bobbins as my space is limited.
as for my favorite pizza its a white one that’s Alfredo with chicken and broccoli garlic. Thanks for the chance and making my mouth water. lol

  54. Due to my sewing room being a small bedroom, my fabric seems to be taking over. I need help with that. But I do love the big window where I have my sewing machine table. Love nature.

  55. Favorite pizza toppings ate broccoli, red bell pepper, spinach, tomatoes, black olives, fresh mozerella! Thank you for a fun way to enter the contest! Veggie and gluten free out of health necessity.

  56. My favorite pizza toppings are pepperoni and extra cheese. I enjoyed reading your blog and getting to know you! I will be back!

  57. My favourite pizza is Borghese style – red and green peppers, ground beef and onions on tomato sauce, topped with cheese and an egg in the middle.

  58. We like to eat with the seasons-even with pizza toppings so my current favorites are asparagus and spring(walking) onions. Hmmm, sounds like a yummy treat for dinner since both of these seasonal delights are coming to an end.

  59. I have 2 sewing spaces, one in my townhouse basement, and one in a sunroom in our small winter home. I am faced with combining both spaces together in the townhouse, and I need all the help I can get to amalgamate two into an organized one!!

  60. Best pizza I ever had was Wild Mushroom in Denali, Alaska. Still dreaming of it 10 years later, and especially as I recently unearthed all the fabric I bought at the quilt shop in each Alaskan town our cruise ship made a stop (7 or more). Now, how to store all the stuff from all the travels we used to take.

  61. Mushrooms are my favorite pizza topping. Thank you for talking about the circle of reach, I love hearing about these ideas and if I don’t win a book, I will be sure to purchase one.

  62. Papa Murphy’s thin crust cowboy pizza, no pepperonis please! We live in the country so no delivery here, that’s why take and bake is the best for us. Hot from the oven with a cold beer!

  63. I absolutely love crispy fried eggplant on my pizza! ♥ My sewing space is in the basement and sometimes it turns into organized chaos. This book would be SEW helpful taming the random craziness. ☺

  64. not sure my previous post went through since I wasn’t logged in first. Pizza with Mushrooms, roasted or well cooked peppers red or green, onion, oregano

  65. I like most of the usual toppings, especially mushrooms, onions, and pineapple. (I rarely get the pineapple, though, because no one else in my family wants it!) I think Lilo’s book might be what I need to reorganize my tiny sewing area.
