Preparation

In January the Village Squares Quilters have a member-teach-member workshop day.  Last year Jeri Riggs taught “Quilt Facing”, another member taught hand quilting and Mary Anne & I worked together as “Quilt Doctors” and helped several of our members with quilts; my co-chair taught curved napkins.  It was a fun experience.

Here we are in January again.  I’ve been preparing samples for the member-teach-member – this will eventually be on display at Hartsdale Fabrics where I’ll teach machine quilting in March & April.  (Note – the schedule currently says 1 4-hour class – it will actually be 3 2-hour classes).  For the demo at guild I’m teaching this:

I saw Gina Perkes demo this on her long arm when she was on The Quilt Show .  Gina uses this technique as a back ground to appliqué or other quilting to fill a space for an even amount of quilting across the surface of a quilt.  Mary Anne reminded me that this technique can be accomplished with any straight line so I’ll have

squares

triangles

& diamonds

There will be one more piece where the grid is actually quilted as well.

Here’s a photo of the back:

I used MasterPiece on the front and several different variegated threads on the back.  Gina uses Libby Lehman’s Bottom Line by Superior for this technique as it really sinks into the quilt, and in the places where back tracking is needed to finish the piece it doesn’t create any bulk.

As with any new quilting technique it does take a bit of practice to get the arcs right, it’s a lot of fun practicing though and in the end there is a whole lot of quilting without a whole lot of marking the quilt top!

Happy quilting!
