The Quilt Studio and I

are somewhat estranged at the moment. Studio is a bit messy, showing signs of work and a lack of orderliness on my part and a great desire to start quilting Split Complementerity Redo. The delay in starting the free-motion quilting has to do with my schedule including some “need to be attentive to” things. One of those things is dinner.

Now, if you know me in real life, cooking is still, after all of these years, not my favorite thing to do. Bake, YES!!! Eat, yes. Cook, not so much. It’s taken years to get a rhythm so that everything is ready at the same time. As I write I realize that cooking and quilting have a lot in common, it’s about timing, creativity, process and timing.

Which now explains why I approach quilting the way I do embracing the whole creativity process in all its messy hot glory. One thing I do like to make is polenta, creamy polenta. This week I thought oh, I’ll add crispy bacon bits and goat cheese. Yeah, it was good. But also not the point of this missive. There comes a moment when deglazing the pan to extract all that delicious stuff on the bottom of the pan. I’d just dumped the crispy bacon into a bowl, grabbed the bottle of wine from the counter and started pouring in the wine – only to realize as the steam started steaming up that my thumb is over the top of the pot and the steam is HOT. And by HOT – I mean

HOT

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! OUCH! HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT! I managed to put the hot pot down on the stove without dropping the hot, steaming pan on the floor. So yes, dear friends I burned my thumb. I am also in the flow of cooking and stopping to take care of said burned thumb wasn’t much of an option. Grabbed a small bowl, added some ice and water and dunked my thumb in there as I could. My Sweetie was able to get the aloe and a bandage for my thumb and then took over doing the dishes.

Oh my goodness I forgot to empty the dishwasher, I’ll be right back.

I’m back. I fully expected my thumb to blister up. Surprisingly nope. It does feel a bit numb and has that post blister, dried prune feel. It’ll peel at some point. That’ll be fun.

For now, I’m off to finish watching the Yankee game. Tonight they are honoring and remembering John Sterling, who died today. May his soul rest in peace. and I suspect that if the Yankees win tonight there will not be a dry eye in the house when John’s voice goes out over the sound system, “The Yankees Win! The YANKEES WIIIIIIIIN!”

Happy Quilting my friends,

Teri

  1. So true about the relationship between cooking and quilting! I hope your thumb is healing and the pain is gone. An injury to the hands is tough on a quilter!
